Publisher's Summary:

In an insightful and frank discussion, John Currin talks about his work's evocative images and the tradition of the nude in painting.

John Currin continues to intrigue and provoke with his works of portraiture and genre scenes. His paintings are currently in a solo exhibition through February 22, 2004 at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York. The show brings together 45 pieces that Deborah Solomon described in The New York Times Magazine as "insistently and irreverently figurative." His work has been featured in solo exhibitions around the world in galleries and museums including the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Des Moines Art Center, the Aspen Art Museum, Regen Projects in Los Angeles, the Ado Gallery in Antwerp, and Finds regional d'Art Contemporain in Limoges, France. He has been the subject of articles in publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Chicago Tribune, and Artforum Art. Mr. Currin was a recipient of the Fiar International Prize, organized by FIAR, Milan. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Art, where he earned a Masters of Fine Art.

Michael Kimmelman became chief art critic at The New York Times in 1990, having joined the staff as an art critic in 1988. His book, Portraits: Talking with Artists at the Met, the Modern, the Louvre, and Elsewhere, which evolved out of interviews that first appeared in The Times, was published in 1998 and selected as a notable book of the year by The Washington Post and The Times. Mr Kimmelman was a finalist in criticism for the Pulitzer Prize in 2000. He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in history from Yale University and received his graduate degree in art history from Harvard University.

This TimesTalks event was recorded on January 9, 2004.
