Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is responsible for editing both the daily and Sunday puzzles for the newspaper. He is The Times fourth puzzle editor. Prior to joining The Times, Mr. Shortz was editor of Games magazine for 15 years. In addition to his work for The Times, he is the director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, which he founded in 1978; puzzlemaster for National Public Radio's program Weekend Edition Sunday; founder of the World Puzzle Championship in 1992; and the author or editor of more than 75 books devoted to puzzles. In 1997, Esquire named him one of "The 100 Best People in the World." Mr. Shortz earned an A.B. degree in Enigmatology, the study of puzzles, from Indiana University in 1974. He believes this is the world's only college degree in the subject. He went on to earn a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977.
