Publisher's Summary:

In an interesting conversation, Dave Matthews talks about the multiplatinum band he started and its growth from a grassroots phenomenon to one of the top-grossing touring bands in America. He also discusses how fame and stardom have changed him and the band.

Dave Matthews, vocalist/guitarist and founder of The Dave Matthews Band, started the band in Charlottesville, Va., in early 1991, when he decided to tape some songs he had written. Mr. Matthews moved from his native South Africa to New York at age 2. Though he also logged time back in South Africa and in Amsterdam, he later joined his family in Charlottesville, where he became part of the local music community and hatched the idea for the band. He finally assembled its multiracial members, including Leroi Moore (reeds/saxophone), Boyd Tinsley (violin), Steffan Lessard (bass), and Carter Beauford (drums). They forged a vibrant, individual sound from their wide instrumental range, with the eclectic mix complementing Mr. Matthews' own expanded world view. Together they built a formidable reputation on a punishing touring schedule. Their third studio album, Before These Crowded Streets, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Mr. Matthews also recently released a solo album.

Jon Pareles, chief popular music critic of The New York Times, joined The Times as a music critic in August 1985, after having been a stringer since 1982. Previously he was a music editor for Crawdaddy, an associate editor at Rolling Stone, and then a senior editor at The Village Voice. He majored in music at Yale, has performed in various musical ensembles, and is the co-editor of The Rolling Stone Encylopedia of Rock & Roll.

This TimesTalks event was recorded January 9, 2004.
