Publisher's Summary:

Herman Melville's first novel is based on his experiences traveling through the South Sea islands. It tells of a man and his friend Toby who jump ship in the Marquesas Islands and end up in the valley of Typee, where they become the captives of the island's inhabitants - cannibals. Rather than eating them, however, their captors simply will not let them leave. Toby does escape, but the hero is left behind with a leg wound. He is nursed back to health by the lovely Fayaway, and must make a decision of whether to remain with her in an idyllic existence or return to civilization. When Typee was published, it shocked its original audience with its truthful account of Polynesian life.
