Publisher's Summary:

This epic novel chronicles the triumphs and tragedies of 4 generations of Jewish-American women. The saga begins with Sarah Solomon, who flees her Russian home in the 1880's to escape a pogrom. She lands in America in 1905 where she works as a painter and befriends other Jewish artists and radicals. Sarah's daughter Salome grows up in the Roaring Twenties and travels frequently to Europe with fellow intellectuals. Her daughter Sally, a world-famous folksinger, falls victim to many of the excesses of the 1960s, but Sally's Generation X daughter Sara chooses a more grounded lifestyle, becoming a historian. As Sara pieces together the history of her family, she reveals the story of the sweeping changes faced by American women during this century.
