Publisher's Summary:

Novelist and essayist David Bradley maintains that there is no such thing as The Black Experience or The Black Novel: "The fact that I'm a Black person does not mean that I write a novel in a particular way, or deal with particular issues. It means I can pick and choose, like every other writer can pick and choose. I certainly wouldn't want white people judging black people by my behavior, or my writing, or anything like that." Bradley grew up outside Bedford, Pennsylvania, the son of a long line of AME Zion Church ministers. His novel, The Cheneysville Incident won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1981. In this conversation, he discusses The Cheneysville Incident in depth and also talks about how race impacts the way he is perceived both as an individual and as a writer.
