Publisher's Summary:

Robert Stone is regarded as one of the finest writers in the United States, despite his being the author of a relatively small number of novels and short stories. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he joined the Navy and attended New York University before heading to Stanford, where he became involved with Ken Kesey and the famous Merry Pranksters. Stone's novels include A Hall of Mirrors, winner of the Faulkner Award for best novel in 1968, Dog Soldiers, one of the finest American novels about Vietnam and winner of the National Book Award, and what many consider his masterpiece, A Flag for Sunrise. In this 1982 conversation, which Stone considers to be "the interview of record," he discusses his central thematic concerns, both religious and political, plus his ideas about the place of craft, vision, and plot in fiction.
