Roy Thomas Fielding, 34, is one of the early pioneers of the World Wide Web. In 1994, he developed the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http), the standard for how text, images, sounds, and video are transferred over the Net. Now, Fielding is a leader in the open-source software movement. He has made it his goal to prevent any one person from owning the Internet. To that end, his company, the Apache Group, is a collection of programmers who give their Web browser away for free. Today, their web browser powers more than half of the current web browsers out there. Fielding was selected to Technology Review's list of 100 Top Young Innovators. At the daylong conference announcing those chosen, Audible's John Barth sat down with this under 35, cutting-edge thinker to discuss his work. Technology Review is MIT's magazine of innovation.
